Effective Packing for a race
A quick Guide…(I love bullet points and not long paragraphs)
Will I have time to actually fix the car?
Weekend race = Yes
Single Track day = Maybe
Drag racing night = Maybe
Single Autocross = No
What do you actually need?
TEST TEST TEST - Trial runs where failing is an option.
Take the car to a similar event, autocross or street drive to stress test it. You want to break it when you have time and winning doesn’t depend on your race-car functioning perfectly.
What has failed in the past?
Things usually fail, immediately, intermittently or later on. If there is a trend bank on it happening when you are pushing it to the limit.
Why did it fail?
Was it a fluke? Can it happen again? Be ready.
If you have no data or you are in a new-ish vehicle, google common problems, ask the community.
Parts Sparing
Can you procure the part on site (autozone-able)
Order Specialized components that have failed or are old and near end of life
Replace old component and keep as spare (no money? keep old spark plugs etc)
Junkyard set of bolts
Go to junkyard and source bolts for items associated with parts that fail or might come loose. Exhaust, Suspension bolts, etc
Tires?
This is a tough one. If its a weekend race I usually keep 2 spares in-case of a flat. It is an expensive spare, so rolling the dice on this one is more acceptable.
